Next time you step into your workplace, take note of the energy you’re bringing into the office with you.  Do you feel tired, unmotivated, or frustrated?  Or are you feeling confident and ready to tackle a new day?

As Tim explains in the video, managing your energy is a key strategy for boosting your productivity and overall happiness. In addition, if you don’t take the time to take care of your own needs and do things that fuel your passions, it can significantly impact your workplace habits and success.

If you frequently feel devoid of energy or stressed out after working, keep the following tips in mind so you can make the most out of your workday, combat stress, and still have energy for your hobbies outside of the office.

Notice Low ROE Tasks

In this context, the acronym ROE stands for “return on energy,” or the energy you gain after completing specific tasks. For example, finally closing on a big sale will probably give you a high ROE, whereas doing tedious paperwork may cause you to lose energy (low ROE). When you consider your own daily tasks, in and out of the office, write down items that give you a high ROE and low ROE.

Once you have all of your tasks written out in front of you, you can begin taking steps to manage your day more effectively. Instead of procrastinating on low ROE tasks until the end of the day, perhaps completing them first thing in the morning will allow you to feel more energized as the day continues. Maybe you need to spend more time on hobbies outside of work to unwind and focus on your passions. No matter what areas of life are depleting you of energy, you can start making small changes to your daily schedule in order to maximize your energy and enrich your life.

Ways to Balance Your Energy

To gain a more concrete perception of your energy levels, imagine you are given 100 energy chips each morning when you wake up. Every task you complete throughout the day costs energy, but in an ideal situation, you should still have a few energy chips left over when you go to sleep at night. However, this is not the case for some loan officers.

Certain tasks can take significant amounts of energy, causing you to end the workday with no more energy to do things outside of the office. You may go home feeling exhausted and worn out, too tired to do activities you usually enjoy. If this happens often, it’s time to start making adjustments now so you can avoid burnout, chronic fatigue, and other negative factors of poor energy management. Here are a few basic tips to get started:

  • Prioritize your basic needs. As the saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” If you’re constantly depleted of energy, you won’t be able to reach your greatest potential in the workplace or at home. You might be tempted at times to skip breakfast so you can sleep in later, or stay awake late into the night to catch up on work, but doing so can be counterproductive. Stay in tune with your body to ensure that you get an adequate amount of sleep and eat plenty of nutritious foods.
  • Stick to a daily routine. It’s recommended to split up your workday into manageable blocks of time between 1 to 2 hours each. Focus on one task during each time period to improve your productivity and motivation throughout the day. Tim also states that people are typically most productive in the morning, so tackling your low ROE tasks first can make the rest of your day seem like a breeze.
  • Be wary of the “stimulant cycle.” Millions of people enjoy their coffee in the morning, but if you start relying on coffee or other caffeinated beverages to get you through the day, this could be a sign that your energy balance is off. Some loan officers may get into the habit of slamming coffee before work to gain energy and then resorting to alcohol after work to help them relax. Although there’s nothing wrong with sipping your daily Starbucks or having a glass of wine with dinner, it can be a slippery slope if you start depending on these things to fuel your everyday life.
  • Explore your hobbies. Having a hobby that you genuinely enjoy can help you gain energy and allow you to de-stress after a long day at work. Think back to hobbies you used to enjoy before your career really took off. Maybe it’s time to break out your paint brushes again, dust off your piano, or join a sports team. Give yourself the freedom to have fun again! You’ll soon reap the benefits of an improved mood, more energy, and greater success in the workplace.
